The Evolution of Social Media
Almost every brand on earth is active on at least two social media platforms. 74 billion dollars of advertising was spent on social networks in 2018. That’s a staggering amount! And yet, while the majority of people discuss brands on these platforms, only 6% of them follow the brand’s profile. Despite this huge amount of advertising revenue, brands should still monitor their social media presence to ensure that they’re being mentioned in the right context.
Trends in social media usage
The demographics of social media use vary a great deal from country to country, and the demographics of social media use have major implications for markets and information flows. Depending on the age of the user, a significant portion of social media users can be classified as millennials, and the share of younger users has increased significantly in the past decade. This article explores the fundamental characteristics of social media usage in Australia and illustrates key issues in social media usage. We also discuss salient policy issues and challenges, including the evolution of digital infrastructure and media law.
Facebook, the most popular social media platform in the world, saw its highest levels of engagement during the morning and evening hours. While Facebook had few “off” periods in the past years, this year’s data shows a consistent engagement pattern. In particular, the engagement rate on Facebook increased during weekdays, evenings, and weekends. These trends can help brands reach a wider audience with more relevant content. Ultimately, social media usage trends will continue to shape marketing strategies in the US and beyond.
Live-stream trading, QR codes, and video sharing are growing rapidly in China. Instagram and TikTok are catching up fast in China, and it’s estimated that by 2021, these apps will overtake Facebook and leave it behind. But there are always trends to watch out for. In particular, the live-streaming phenomenon is set to grow in China, where TikTok is predicted to surpass Facebook, while Facebook and Instagram will remain stagnant.
Evolution of social media platforms
The evolution of social media platforms is a constant process. Each platform introduces new features and updates their algorithms. Nelson Spade, General Manager of Circulus Digital Media, discussed the newest trends and how businesses can benefit from them. In this article, we’ll look at the changing face of streaming services and how businesses can leverage this opportunity to increase their brand awareness and revenue. The evolution of social media platforms will determine whether they’re relevant or outdated.
Before Facebook, Twitter, and Myspace, people used these platforms to connect with friends and family. The evolution of social media platforms began in the early 2000s with websites like Friendster, which was a popular social media site in its early days. Within a few months of launch, Friendster had three million users. Other features included customizable profile backgrounds, music, and shoutouts. In the following years, Myspace began to take over. It was popular with job seekers and human resources managers alike.
Reddit launched in 2005 as a news-sharing platform, but quickly evolved into a social commentary site where users can create, comment, and share media. Other notable launches of this type of social media platform include Facebook, Twitter, Bebo, and Reddit. Since then, these sites have evolved into behemoths. Today, Facebook remains the leading social media platform, and the company plans to introduce new ad formats every year.
Impact of COVID-19 lockdown on social media usage
In a globalized, digital society, social media is a crucial medium for communication during times of emergency and pandemic. This study aims to fill the gap in literature on the impact of COVID-19 lockdowns on social media usage and its influences. Participants filled an online questionnaire during the lockdown. We formulated a questionnaire consisting of 22 statements that could be positive or negative, depending on the person’s age, gender, and level of education.
While analyzing the impact of the global COVID-19 lockdown on social media use, we can see that the majority of adolescents indicated a heightened use of online social platforms during the period of the global lockdown. Participants accessed these sites actively to manage the lockdown, a process that relieved distress and anxiety, and increased feelings of happiness. We can further extend this study by identifying how COVID-19 lockdowns impact social media usage among adolescents.
The COVID-19 lockdown has undoubtedly reduced social media usage, but it has also made it more valuable. While increasing interest has been beneficial for users, it has done nothing to help website owners. The decrease in advertising and social media marketing has slowed web traffic, which is already low. Meanwhile, businesses are cutting marketing expenses to cope with the lockdown. Despite this, forecasters predict a 15% decrease in travel ad revenue.
Impact of TikTok
The influencer model has been all the rage for years, but the Generation Z generation has been around long enough to see the pitfalls of such a model. In the past, micro-influencers exchanged coverage and free products for big name brands to gain celebrity status. Although some have found success as influencers, the majority of younger audiences prefer more raw, authentic content. TikTok has helped fill that void by creating niche communities.
The impact of TikTok is already felt. The app has been named one of the fastest growing social networks and is one of the top apps downloaded worldwide. The app’s growth has continued to grow, and during Q1 2019 alone, it had 13.2 million new users in the United States, up 181% year-over-year. It has one billion users worldwide, surpassing Twitter, Snapchat, and LinkedIn.
The novelty of the app’s algorithm allows anyone to become a viral video. TikTok is open to all, giving the LGBTQ+ community and people of color a platform to express themselves. Videos can be up to 60 seconds in length and can loop, making them digestible and engaging. Users can use the app to share their own video, sound effects, special effects, and video reactions. There’s no end to the fun on TikTok!
Impact of Pinterest
There are two main ways to improve your presence on Pinterest. First, make sure that you have a strategy in place for your content. The best way to maximize exposure on Pinterest is to pin frequently. When a user likes your content, they’ll see it more often and it increases your chance of getting a large number of people to view it. Second, make sure that your content has a high quality score. By doing so, you’ll boost your chances of getting shared organically.
Third, remember that Pinterest has a strong skewed demographic, and it is based primarily on networks. That means that the content you see will be appealing to this particular demographic. That way, you’ll see an increase in users in a short amount of time. But what if you’re targeting people who aren’t using social media? In this case, you may want to create a more specific board.
Last, don’t ignore the influence of advertising on Pinterest. It’s possible to boost traffic on Pinterest by offering targeted ads to users. In the United States, half of the people who use Pinterest buy products based on what they saw on the site. So, the impact of Pinterest on social media is enormous. So, how can you use it to increase your sales? Follow the links below to get started! Consider incorporating Pinterest into your marketing mix.
Impact of Instagram
This study investigated the impact of Instagram usage on social health. We aimed to assess the impact of this social networking platform on people’s mental health by analyzing how often users use the app, and how much time they spend on it. The results show that Instagram usage does not affect a person’s psychopathology. Instead, the impact of using the social network is dependent on how long users spend on the app. The amount of time spent on Instagram should be analyzed as a single item, rather than the overall usage time.
We found that Instagram use had indirect effects on social anxiety, mediated by self-esteem and social comparison. The increase in social comparison and lower self-esteem were correlated with increased social anxiety. Further, our study found no association between age and social issues, which suggests that the impact of Instagram on social anxiety is mediated through self-esteem and social comparison. Thus, future studies should focus on the mechanisms of social media use to better design wellness programs for the digital age.
Although Instagram is largely popular among younger groups, school educators should guide the use of the social network. One way to do this is to host a documentary film with student and parents about anxiety, social media, and technology. Schools have used hashtags to help students through exam seasons, and have used these to create an online supportive environment. The film has also shown that using hashtags can be a positive influence on the social network.
